Last night I went to the utterly extraordinary and captivating performance of Les Misérables. Honestly difficult to find the words!
I went along not really knowing what to expect. I have seen one of the films so i know the basic plot but I haven't yet read the book. I was going along with my wondeful mother who'd bought the tickets on my birthday back in March as a present. She had told me it was her favourtie musical of all time and that she'd been to see it London's West End and fallen in love with everything about it. I was definitely excited, and wanted it to live up to my built expectations.
‘Thrilling, spectacular & unforgettable’ – The New York Times
‘A five star hit, astonishingly powerful’ – The Times, UK
Without doubt, it definitely did! Taking a little while to pique my attention from the start, by the midpoint of Act I i was engrossed entirely, between the cotumes, the sets, the intricate character plots and intertwinings, and the range of emotions that the performances evoke from audiences, it just pulled those same emotions from me as well. By the final scene I was crying and had to stop myself, It was going all over my suit.
Just to elaborate a bit more on the costumes though! Perfection!!! Every sort of outfit for every class of gentleman and lady was catered for meticulously, the detailing held historical reference to the era but at the same time was decadent with all the theatrical flair of costume deisgner ANDREANE NEOFITOU
(amazing!)
In short, it was well worth seeing, and my hands were hurting by the end from all of the applause, it brings about a powerful range of emotions, addresses issues of the class system at the time and the delicate complexities of human forgiveness. In the end, you're crying not only for the heroes and villains, but for the time period, the general tragedy, and also for the blossoming hopefullness that comes with closing the performance in the hands of the beautiful loving and youthful next generation. Complete and total adoration, and i'm all the more excited to read the book and see all of the films now!
I'm out of words, SEE IT! (a small youtube trailer for the Melbourne Performance)
